IVF Success in Taiwan | Indonesian Couple Overcomes Uterine Osseous Metaplasia

For many international couples, building a family while living abroad is not always easy. When months or even years of trying to conceive pass without success, the challenges extend beyond infertility itself. Language barriers and cultural differences can make seeking fertility treatment even more difficult.

This is the story of an Indonesian couple, both working as airline cabin crew, who came to NUWA Fertility Center in Taoyuan after being referred by a colleague.

Language Is Never a Barrier: International Fertility Care at NUWA

When we first met this couple, they spoke very little Chinese. At NUWA, however, language is never an obstacle on the journey to parenthood.

We provide comprehensive international medical services with multilingual support in English, Japanese, Cantonese, Indonesian, and other languages. From treatment planning and appointment scheduling to follow-up reminders, our international care team accompanies patients throughout every stage of their fertility journey.

For overseas patients, being able to communicate in a familiar language, fully understand their treatment plan, and ask questions with confidence often makes a significant difference during fertility treatment.

A Previous Natural Pregnancy Ended in Pregnancy Loss

Five years before visiting our clinic, the couple conceived naturally. Unfortunately, abnormalities were detected during the pregnancy, and they had to undergo a medically indicated termination at five months of gestation.

Over the following five years, they were unable to conceive again.

Considering that both husband and wife were under the age of 35, their chances of pregnancy should not have been considered low. It was difficult to understand why they had gone so long without another pregnancy. Five years is a very long time for any couple hoping to welcome a child.

Five Years of Infertility Revealed a Rare Condition: Uterine Osseous Metaplasia

During their first consultation, the doctor’s priority was to identify the underlying cause of their infertility rather than simply beginning treatment.

A pelvic ultrasound revealed a highly echogenic white lesion inside the uterine cavity. To investigate further, we performed a hysteroscopy.

The hysteroscopy suggested the presence of uterine osseous metaplasia, as the uterine cavity was occupied by abnormal bone-like tissue. This rare condition had likely prevented embryo implantation and was the reason the couple had been unable to conceive again.

What Is Uterine Osseous Metaplasia?

Uterine osseous metaplasia is a rare gynecological condition in which mature or immature bone tissue develops within the endometrium. It may occur after a miscarriage or pregnancy termination.

The presence of bone tissue inside the uterus can interfere with embryo implantation, leading to recurrent infertility or prolonged difficulty conceiving.

Although this condition is uncommon, it should be considered in women with a history of second-trimester pregnancy loss, unexplained long-term infertility, or infertility without an identifiable cause.

Treat the Cause First, Then IVF: A Successful Pregnancy After One Embryo Transfer

Once the diagnosis was confirmed, the team first performed hysteroscopic surgery to remove the osseous tissue and restore a healthy uterine environment.

After the uterus had recovered, the couple proceeded with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo culture.

Ultimately, we transferred one blastocyst.
Fortunately, the embryo implanted successfully, and the couple achieved pregnancy. Today, they are eagerly looking forward to welcoming their baby into the world.

Trying to Conceive for Over a Year? When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?

Infertility can have many different causes, and early evaluation is often the key to finding the right solution.

Dr. Szu-Yu Shen recommends seeking a fertility evaluation if:
  • You are under 35 years old and have been trying to conceive naturally for more than one year without success.
  • You are 35 years or older and have been trying to conceive for more than six months.
  • You have a history of miscarriage, pregnancy termination, gynecologic surgery, or other reproductive health concerns.
In many cases, once the underlying cause of infertility is identified, successful pregnancy becomes much more achievable.

At NUWA Fertility Center, we are committed to providing personalized fertility care for both local and international patients. Whether you are facing unexplained infertility or preparing for IVF treatment in Taiwan, our experienced team is here to help you find answers and support you on your journey toward parenthood.

Every fertility journey is unique. Let NUWA help you take the next step toward welcoming your own miracle.
