Pregnancy may seem like a natural part of life, but for many couples, the journey to parenthood can be filled with uncertainty, heartbreak, and hope.
Mrs. S, a 35-year-old woman from Korea, had been living in Taiwan due to her husband's work. After more than a year of marriage, the couple conceived naturally. Unfortunately, the pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage, and genetic testing later revealed that the fetus had Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome).
In addition to her previous pregnancy loss, Mrs. S had also been diagnosed with a left-sided fallopian tube obstruction. Concerned about experiencing another miscarriage, she came to NUWA Fertility Center seeking a more comprehensive fertility plan.
Choosing IVF with PGS After a Chromosomal Abnormality
Although Mrs. S was still relatively young, her previous experience with a chromosomal abnormality made the couple eager to reduce the risk of another miscarriage. For them, PGT-A was not only about improving the chances of pregnancy success but also about minimizing the possibility of experiencing another loss.
AMH 5.40 ng/mL: 18 Eggs Retrieved and 10 Blastocysts Cultured
Mrs. S had an Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) level of 5.40 ng/mL, indicating a good ovarian reserve.
During her IVF cycle, 18 eggs were retrieved, resulting in 10 Day 5 blastocysts. Given her age and favorable prognosis, only three embryos were selected for PGT-A testing, of which two embryos were found to be chromosomally normal (euploid).
A Natural Pregnancy Before Embryo Transfer
Before starting her planned embryo transfer cycle, Mrs. S unexpectedly conceived naturally.
However, serial hCG monitoring suggested weak implantation, and the pregnancy ended before a gestational sac could be identified on ultrasound. Facing another loss was emotionally difficult for the couple, but fortunately, Mrs. S recovered well physically, allowing them to continue with the original treatment plan.
Successful Pregnancy After a Single Euploid Embryo Transfer
The following month, one of the PGT-A confirmed euploid embryos was transferred.
This time, there were strong indications of implantation, and the pregnancy progressed normally. After confirming stable early pregnancy development, Mrs. S returned to Korea to continue her prenatal care closer to home.
Premature Delivery at 27 Weeks, Followed by a Healthy Outcome
Later in pregnancy, complications related to placental insufficiency led to a premature delivery at 27 weeks of gestation.
Although the early arrival of their baby brought understandable anxiety, the newborn received excellent neonatal care. Today, he has grown into a healthy and energetic little boy.
Every fertility journey is unique, and this family's story reminds us that even after setbacks and uncertainty, hope can still lead to a joyful ending.
Who May Benefit from PGS?
PGS is not necessary for every IVF cycle. However, it may be worth discussing with your fertility specialist if you:
- Are 35 years of age or older
- Have experienced recurrent miscarriages
- Have had repeated IVF implantation failures
- Have a personal or family history of chromosomal abnormalities or balanced translocations
The decision to pursue PGT-A should be individualized based on factors such as age, medical history, embryo availability, and personal preferences. A thorough discussion with a reproductive specialist can help determine whether this approach is appropriate for your situation.
International IVF Care: Why Korean Patients Choose Taiwan for IVF Treatment
